No. 4 Cardinal Defeat No. 22 Southern Illinois 9-1

Columbia, Mo. - Senior Leah Nelson homered twice as the fourth-ranked Stanford Cardinal defeated No. 22 Southern Illinois, 9-1, in NCAA Regional action, today in Columbia, Mo. The Cardinal improve to 42-14 overall, while the Salukis drop to 47-13.
Lauren Lappin drew a walk in the top of the first to get things started for the Cardinal. Michelle Smith single to left to advance Lappin to second. A wild pitch moved the runners over. Jackie Rinehart singled to left, scoring Lappin to give Stanford the 1-0 lead.
Southern Illinois hit a solo homerun in the bottom of the second to tie the game at one-all.
With two outs in the top of the third, Smith singled through the right side. Leah Nelson then doubled to center, scoring Smith. After a pitching change, Rinehart doubled to center to bring home Nelson. Erin Howe walked to put runners on first and second. A single by Meghan Sickler got Nelson and put Stanford up 4-1.
Smith doubled to lead off the fifth inning. Heather Shook entered the game as a pinch runner. Nelson then hit her eighth homerun of the season - a shot to rightfield - to clear the bases.
Lappin doubled to open the top of the seventh inning. Smith then hit her 19th homerun of the season off the scoreboard in leftfield. Then Nelson hit her second homer of the game - a solo shot to rightfield - to make the score 9-1.
Freshman hurler Becky McCullough (20-6) threw a complete game, scattering five hits and one run over seven innings of work. Saluki Amy Harre (23-9) took the loss, allowing three runs on five hits over 2.2 innings.
Michelle Smith went 4-for-4 at the plate including a double and a homerun. Leah Nelson led the team with four RBI on the afternoon. Jackie Rinehart had a 2-for-4 effort with two RBI and a run scored. Lauren Lappin picked up two runs as well.
Stanford is back in action tomorrow at 1 p.m. and will play the winner of tonight's 7 p.m. game. Missouri will take on Robert Morris in the 3:30 p.m. game.
