Several Stanford Affiliates Compete At Stanford University Invitational Grand Prix

Stanford, Calif. - Several Stanford affiliates competed for Palo Alto Stanford Aquatics Friday on the first day of the 2005 Stanford University Grand Prix at the Avery Aquatic Center. The inaugural three-day long-course meters meet that runs through Sunday is being hosted by Stanford men's and women's swimming and Palo Alto Stanford Aquatics (PASA). The event is the first of four stops on the U.S. Grand Prix circuit.
Current Stanford swimmers Dana Kirk (2005-06 senior) and Brooke Bishop (2005-06 sophomore) had the top showings by Stanford affiliates in the meet. Kirk was second in the 200 fly with a time of 2:12.88, while Bishop took second in the 100 free in a personal-best time of 56.69.Three Stanford affiliates had third-place showings on Friday. Tara Kirk, a Stanford swimmer from 2000-04, was third in the 200 breast in 2:30.46. Current Stanford swimmer Laura Davis (2005-06 senior) finished third in the 200 fly one spot behind Dana Kirk with a 2:18.09 mark.
Stanford affiliates Lauren Hentzen (2005-06 junior), Desiree Stahley (2005-06 junior) and Elizabeth Durot (2005-06 sophomore) finished third, fourth and seventh in the 800 free respectively. Hentzen clocked in at 8:57.01 to just nip Stahley's 8:57.51 with Durot coming in at 9:05.71.
Davis also finished sixth in the championship final of the 200 breast with a time of 2:44.11 after checking in with a 2:40.79 time in the prelims.
Stahley (11th, 59.04) also competed in the consolation finals of the 100 free, while Durot (22nd, 1:00.25) was in the bonus finals of the event that Caroline Bruce (35thT, 1:01.36 prelims) and Dana Kirk (50th, 1:02.13 prelims) also participated in.
Anna Strohl (16th, 2:24.67, 2:23.46 prelims) made the consolation finals of the 200 fly, while Lauren Costella (2005-06 Stanford junior) was 24th after finishing the bonus finals in 2:29.79 (2::27.81 prelims).
Mary Descenza of the Athens-Bulldog Swim Club won two of the three individual events contested on the women's side on Friday with victories in the 100 free (56.18) and 200 fly (2:11.15). Kate Ziegler of The Fish captured the 800 free in 8:30.68, while a KING-PN squad of Ariana Kukors, Megan Jendrick, Courtney Eronemo and Emilee Jennings took the 400 relay in 4:13.57.
