California Advances to Super Regional Round

May 21, 2005

FRESNO, Calif. - Kelly Anderson threw her second no-hitter in as many days and Vicky Galindo's first-inning homer held up as the California softball team defeated Fresno State, 1-0, to capture the Region 2 title on Saturday at Bulldog Diamond. The Bears, who dropped their tournament opener to BYU on Thursday, won four games in two days - all against the threat of elimination - becoming the first Cal squad to accomplish such a feat.

The victory against the host Bulldogs was the second in a span of five hours for Cal (50-12). Fresno State was unbeaten in the double-elimination competition entering the day. Following Thursday's loss, Cal defeated Long Beach State (4-3) and BYU (9-0, five innings) Friday to advance from the loser's bracket.

The Bears will face the Region 15 champion - either Baylor or Florida State - in the Super Regional round, which begins on Friday, May 27 at a yet-to-be determined site. Pairings and sites for all Super Regional games will be available late Sunday evening.

'When the pressure comes on, this team has done nothing but prosper,' Cal head coach Diane Ninemire said.

Anderson (27-7) received all of the offense she would need on Galindo's third homer of the season - an arching shot that carried just over the right field wall and out of reach of Fresno State's Daisy Gaynor.

Anderson, who no-hit BYU Friday with six strikeouts, was even more impressive against the nation's 15th-ranked team. In perhaps her most dominant performance of the season, she allowed just one ball to leave the infield - a right field flyout by the Bulldogs' Leticia Pacheco in the first - and just faced just two batters over the minimum. She also didn't allow a runner past first base. All of this after tossing six innings and picking up the victory in Cal's defeat of Fresno earlier in the day.

The no-hitter was the seventh of Anderson's career. She ranks second all-time in that category.

Overall, Anderson allowed just one run and five hits in 20.1 innings pitched at the Fresno State Regional.

Fresno starter Jamie Southern, who tossed all of the Bulldogs' postseason innings, scattered seven hits and struck out three. Southern (28-5) no-hit BYU on Friday to send the Bulldogs to the championship round.
