Cougars Fall 4-1 To UCLA In Final Home Game

Pullman, Wash. - - UCLA starting pitcher Brian Schroeder threw his first complete game of the season, giving up one run in nine innings of work, to lead the Bruins past Washington State 4-1 in Pacific-10 baseball action Sunday. The Bruins won two of the three game series at Bailey-Brayton Field.
Schroeder (4-6) threw 115 pitches, scattered six hits and struck out four. WSU starter Jimmy Freeman (7-7) took the loss, giving up three runs on four hits over 7.2 innings. Brett Sommer replaced Freeman in the eighth, working one inning allowing one run and two hits. Travis Webb finished up for the Cougars.
With the win, UCLA improved to 15-37, 4-17 overall in the Pac-10. Washington State fell to 21-34, 1-20 in the conference.
Everett tied up the contest 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth with a home run to right field. The solo shot marked his 15th home run of the year and his 62nd run batted in of the season.
UCLA scored the winning run in the fifth on a Will Penniall sacrifice fly that drove home Eric Taylor Jr. Taylor walked, was sacrificed to second and advanced to third on a Josh Roenicke single.
The Bruins added runs in the eighth and ninth innings to put away the game. Chris Jensen was hit by a pitch and later scored in the eighth on a Hector Ambriz single. The final tally of the game came in the ninth when Jensen came home on a Nolan Rouse sacrifice fly to center.
UCLA was first on the board after Roenicke reached base on a WSU throwing error, advanced to second on a walk, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Brett McMillan ground out.
The Cougars travel to Tempe, Ariz., for their final three games of the season, taking on Arizona State at Packard Stadium beginning Friday, May 27.
