Huskies Advance To NCAA Super Regional

LINCOLN, Neb. - Washington's Sarah Hyatt hit a bloop single into centerfield in the sixth inning to score Jessica Wilkinson and spark a two-run inning as the Huskies (34-20) defeated Iowa (50-14) 2-0 in the regional championship today at Bowlin Stadium. Washington advances to the NCAA Super Regional and will face the winner of today's Michigan vs. North Carolina game next Friday, May 27.
Senior Ashley Boek (20-12) earned the shutout victory as she held the Hawkeyes to just one hit.
'It was a well played ballgame,' said head coach Heather Tarr. 'Ashley threw a great game, almost threw a no-hitter and did a great job defensively. Sarah's hit up the middle to score Jessica was solid and whatever we had to do to score runs today, we did it.'
Washington put runners on base in every inning but the second frame and had numerous opportunities to score early.
Dominique Lastrapes led off the game with a double down the left field line and moved to third on a passed ball but Washington could not bring her home. Iowa pitcher Lisa Birocci used a strikeout, pop-up and ground out to get out of the inning unscathed.
Washington stranded three more base runners in the third frame. Jacki Hansen was hit by a pitch and Lastrapes followed with a single through the left side. Kristen Rivera then drew an 11-pitch walk to load the bases with two outs. Kathy Fiske hit a hard ground ball up the middle that shortstop Stacy May made a great play on the get the out at second base and get out of the jam.
The Hawkeyes got their first and only hit in the third frame with a slap by Jenna Sprat that slowly rolled down the third base line but Boek tallied three strikeouts to end the inning.
Washington finally got on the scoreboard in the sixth inning with two runs on four hits. Fiske led off with a double to left field and was replaced by Wilkinson. Hyatt then hit a flare into centerfield to score Wilkinson. Caitlin Noble followed with a shot into right field to move Hyatt to third. Hansen walked to load the bases and Lastrapes hit her fourth hit of the game with a ground ball through the right side to score Hyatt and give the Huskies the 2-0 lead.
Boek (20-12) earned her third win of the tournament as she held Iowa to one hit, while striking out 10. Today marked her 125th career start to set a UW record and her 163rd appearance ties for the No. 6 spot on the Pac-10 all-time list.
Birocci (29-9) took the loss as she gave up two runs on eight hits, while striking out four in 6 2/3 innings.
Boek was named the tournament MVP as she went 3-0 with 32 strikeouts in 23.1 innings over the weekend. She held her opponents to a .130 average with 10 hits and two earned runs.
Also named to the all-tournament team were Hyatt, Lastrapes and Aimee Minor. Lastrapes led all players with a .667 average (8-for-12), including two doubles. Hyatt hit .455 (5-for-11) with two home runs and four RBIs, while Minor also had two home runs and four RBIs.
With the win, Washington extends its regional win streak to 11 games. The Huskies will face the winner of today's Michigan/ North Carolina game. Michigan is the No. 1 seed overall and would have to lose to North Carolina twice to not advance to the Super Regional.
