No. 4 Cardinal Defeat No. 16 Missouri To Advance To NCAA Super Regional

May 22, 2005

Columbia, Mo. - A three-run homerun by Leah Nelson proved to be the difference as the fourth-ranked Stanford softball team defeated No. 16 Missouri, 3-2, this afternoon, to advance to NCAA Super Regional action next week. The Cardinal improve to 43-14 while the Tigers end their season at 44-15.

Missouri struck first in the bottom of the first when leftfielder Michaela Minner hit a two run homerun to centerfield.

Stanford retook the lead in the top of the third. Katherine Hoffman led off with a bloop single to left. Catalina Morris then doubled to right center, moving Hoffman to third. A wild pitch got Morris to third, but Hoffman was thrown out at the plate. With two outs, Leah Nelson hit her 10th homerun of the season to clear the bases.

Katherine Hoffman went 2-for-3 for the Cardinal while Leah Nelson ended the afternoon with three RBI. Erin Howe had a 1-for-2 day at the plate as well.

Freshman hurler Becky McCullough (21-6) picked up the win in the circle for Stanford, scattering four hits and two runs over seven innings of work with six strikeouts. Erin Kalka (10-8) took the loss for the Tigers, allowing three runs on four hits in 2.2 innings.

Stanford will face Tennesse in a best two-of-three series beginning May 27 at Smith Family Stadium.
