Arizona's Boyer, Oregon State's Buck Named Pac-10 Baseball Player/Pitcher of the Week

May 24, 2005

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - ARIZONA junior second baseman Brad Boyer has been named Pacific-10 Conference Baseball Player of the Week and OREGON STATE sophomore right-handed pitcher Dallas Buck has been named Pitcher of the Week for May 17-23, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.

Boyer, from Camarillo, Calif., helped lead Arizona to its third straight season series victory over Stanford in Palo Alto, Calif., last weekend. The Wildcats infielder batted .429 (6-for-14) with a double, two runs scored and a team-high seven RBI in the key Pac-10 series. In UA's series-opening 9-4 victory on May 20, Boyer went 2-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored. He finished 3-for-5 with a double, a game-high four RBI and a run scored in the series-clinching 11-8 win on May 22. He collected at least one hit in all three contests over the weekend to extend his hitting streak to a season-best 12 straight games. During his hitting streak, Boyer is batting .446 (25-for-56) with five doubles, three triples, 17 RBI and 14 runs scored. His hitting streak has raised his season average 53 points from .230 to its current .283 level.

Buck, from Newberg, Ore., earned the win as Oregon State beat Southern California 5-4 on May 20, out-dueling USC's Ian Kennedy in a matchup of pitchers who earlier in the day had been named semifinalists for the Roger Clemens Award. Buck went eight and two-thirds innings, allowing three runs on two hits and three walks while striking out seven. He improved his record to 11-1 this season, tying him for second place on OSU's all-time list of single-season wins leaders. Buck leads the Pac-10 in wins, earned run average (1.93) and innings pitched (107). He is also second in the Conference in opposing batting average (.187) and fifth in strikeouts (109).

The Player of the Week honor is the first of Boyer's career, while it is the 46th such honor for Arizona. The Pitcher of the Week honor is the second consecutive for Buck, as well as the second of his career, and the 57th selection all-time for Oregon State.
