Three Former Bruins Advance to U.S. Open Sectional Qualifying

Three former UCLA golfers earned berths into the Sectional Qualifying for the 105th U.S. Open to be held at Pinehurst No.2, June 16-19.
On May 23, former UCLA All-American and 2004 graduate Travis Johnson fired a four-under par 67 at Angeles National GC in Sunland, CA.
Joining Johnson was former teammate John Merrick, the 2003 Pac-10 champion. Merrick fired a 68 (-4) on Monday at the San Diego CC in Chula Vista.
Also qualifying on May 17 at Crystalaire CC in Llano, CA was former UCLA letterman Eddy Lee, who posted a 68 (-4).
Among the former, current and future players who earned spots as alternates were third-year professional Parker McLachlin, whose 74 May 23 at the Waikoloa Beach Course in Waikoloa, HI, was tied with several other players. Former UCLA letterman Steve Simpkin was the fourth alternate with a 73 at the Brookside CC in Stockton, CA.
Sophomores Chris Heintz and Peter Campbell also earned spots as alternates. Heintz posted a two-under par 70 at the LaQuinta Country Club on May 16 and Campbell posted a 71 at Del Rio CC in Modesto on May 16. Finally, James Lee, a member of the Bruins' 2005 freshman class, posted a 69 (-2) on May 23 at Angeles National to earn an alternate spot.
U.S. Open Sectional Qualifying will be held June 6-7 at 14 sites around the country.
