Bruins Host Georgia for NCAA Super Regional Series
May 25, 2005
UCLA continues its road towards defending its back-to-back NCAA Championships this weekend as the Bruins play host to Georgia for NCAA Super Regional play. Although this is the first year of the Sub Regional/Super Regional NCAA Softball format, UCLA enters this weekend's play with a 22-1 all-time record, as NCAA Regionals were a best-of-three format from the tournament's 1982 inception through the 1993 season.
Selden Fans 58 During Last Weekend's Regional
With her outstanding performance in last weekend's NCAA Regional at Easton Stadium, Anjelica Selden has vaulted through the UCLA, Pac-10 and into the NCAA single-season record book for strikeouts. During NCAA Regional play, Selden had 58 K's with just two walks, throwing 38 innings and every pitch of the Regional for the Bruins.
In the first inning of Saturday's 11-inning loss to Cal State Fullerton, Selden posted two strikeouts to tie and then surpass DeeDee Weiman's UCLA single-season record of 359 K's set in 1994. By the end of the regional, Selden had accumulated 404 strikeouts on the year, becoming the first Bruin and fifth freshman in NCAA Division I history to reach the 400-K milestone. That list of freshmen is a rather elite group, including Monica Abbott of Tennessee (582 in 2004), Cat Osterman of Texas (554 in 2002), Lisa Ishikawa of Northwestern (469 in 1984) and Jamie Southern of Fresno State (400 in 2002).
Selden enters this weekend's Super Regional ranking fourth in Pac-10 single-season history and 22nd in NCAA Division I history for strikeouts in a single season. She would need seven strikeouts to reach the NCAA's top-20 and 34 to reach the top-15 on that list.
Bruins and Bulldogs, Take Five!
UCLA and Georgia met four times during the month of February this season, with the Bruins winning all four meetings. Lisa Dodd pitched in the first meeting, a 4-3 eight-inning win for UCLA. Dodd struck out two and allowed three runs to Georgia as the Bulldogs took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning before a two-RBI double from Dodd in the bottom of the seventh tied the game. Georgia scored its tiebreak runner in the eighth before a pinch-hit double from Whitney Holum for the game-winning RBI in the bottom of the frame.
Selden pitched in the remaining three games for the Bruins and compiled a 3-0 record, 0.00 ERA with three shutouts, 43 strikeouts and no walks in 21 innings against the Bulldogs. On Feb. 4, it was a 7-0 win with Selden scattering five hits and striking out 13 Bulldogs. The following day, Selden K'd 14 while allowing just three hits, and in the final meeting on Feb. 18, Selden pitched a one-hit gem, striking out 16 and facing just one batter over the minimum.
