BEAR NOTES: The California baseball team (32-22, 11-10) visits No. 6-ranked Arizona (36-17, 16-5) this weekend for a crucial three-game conference series at Frank Sancet Field. The Golden Bears, 11-10 in the Pac-10, look to remain .500 or better in league play in order to qualify for a NCAA postseason at-large berth. The Wildcats will be the sixth ranked team Cal has faced this season. The Bears have recorded a 9-9 overall mark against five other ranked foes, with two of their nine losses coming by one run. The Bears already have the most single-season wins (32 with three games remaining) since the 2001 NCAA Regional team finished 34-25. Cal has been solid on the road, amassing a 16-13 overall record, including an impressive 12-5 mark against non-conference opponents. The Bears are also 4-0 in extra-inning games. Cal ranks in the Pac-10's top three in several categories, including doubles (3rd, 104), saves (t-3rd, 12), fewest home runs allowed (2nd, 27) and fielding double plays (2nd, 53). Individually, the Bears have nine different players listed among the conference's statistical leaders. Sophomore center fielder Brennan Boesch and freshman second baseman Josh Satin are hitting .363 and .361, respectively, with Boesch leading Cal in doubles (18), total bases (117), slugging percentage (.574) and on-base percentage (.443), and Satin pacing the Bears in RBI (38) and average with runners in scoring position (.437). On the mound, senior relievers Travis Talbott (5-1, eight saves, 1.36 ERA) and Matt Swanson (6-2, two saves, 1.52 ERA) have put up impressive numbers. Senior starter Eric Dworkis (5-5, 3.33 ERA) has complete-game efforts against Saint Mary's and USC this season as well, and was named the Apr. 26 Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week.

SERIES RECORD: Cal has a 59-85 series record against the Arizona Wildcats. In the last meeting, the Bears won one of three games (L 5-3, W 10-8, L 8-3) at Evans Diamond, Apr. 30-May 2, 2004. In the last series played at Frank Sancet Field, Cal won one of three (L 9-5, L 10-4, W 12-7 10 inn.) May 2-4, 2003.

HEAD COACH David Esquer: Esquer, 39, is in his sixth season at Cal with a career record of 173-160 (.520). In 2001, he was the Pac-10 Coach of the Year after leading the Bears to a 34-25 mark, a third place finish in the Pac-10 (14-10) and a berth to the NCAA Regional in Baton Rouge, LA (1-2). Twenty-five Cal players have signed professional contracts since Esquer became coach, including Conor Jackson, who was a first round draft choice of the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2003. On June 10, 1999, Esquer became only the 10th coach in the history of Cal baseball, which began in 1892. He came to Berkeley after serving as the top assistant at Pepperdine from 1996-99. Esquer was the No. 2 assistant coach at Stanford under Mark Marquess from 1991-96. A shortstop at Stanford from 1984-87, he was a starter on the 1987 College World Series championship team, earning All-Tournament honors. Esquer also earned All-Pac-10 Southern Division honors and went on to play professional baseball for four seasons with the Baltimore, California and Milwaukee organizations.

CAL'S SEASON HIGHLIGHTS: Some highlights for the Bears up to this point of the season include - winning nine-straight games from Feb. 13-Mar. 1 (longest winning streak since 1998). Sophomore right fielder Chris Errecart earning Feb. 15 Pac-10 Player of the Week honors after Cal won two-of-three at Loyola Marymount. Sweeping No. 11 Long Beach State in Long Beach (first road sweep of the 49ers since 1991). Sweeping Saint Mary's, including senior right-hander Eric Dworkis throwing a complete game with 10 strikeouts and senior right-hander Matt Swanson, sophomore right-hander Michael Cooper, junior right-hander Joe Todoroff and freshman right-hander Jason Corder combining to shutout the Gaels, 7-0, Feb. 27. Winning 10-4 at No. 12 Stanford (first win at Sunken Diamond since 2001). Nearly throwing a no-hitter at Pacific (behind the pitching of Todoroff and Swanson - infield single in the bottom of the ninth). Sweeping Washington State for the first Pac-10 series sweep since 2002. Winning two of three over then-No. 24-ranked Arizona State at Evans Diamond. Dworkis earning Apr. 26 Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week honors for throwing a complete-game shutout of No. 24 USC with four hits, one walk and a career-high 11 strikeouts. Cal winning two-of-three over then-No. 24 Stanford May 6-9 for first Pac-10 series victory over the Cardinal since 2001.

BOESCH'S GOLDEN SEASON: Sophomore center fielder Brennan Boesch, a Golden Spikes Award and Brooks Wallace Award candidate, continues to be Cal's leading hitter and is making a strong push for postseason honors, sporting a .363 average (74-for-204) with 18 doubles, two triples, seven home runs and 33 RBI. Boesch also owns a team-best .574 slugging percentage, a .443 on-base percentage and is 22-for-59 (.373) with runners in scoring position. He has had 18 multiple hit games, including going a career-high 5-for-5 with two doubles and two RBI at UCLA Apr. 29. In Cal's first victory this season, Boesch was 3-for-3 with a double, a home run and scored the winning run in the Bears' Feb. 5 extra-inning win over UC Irvine. Last season in his first collegiate at-bat, Boesch hit a two-run homer versus BYU, and went on to hit another two-run homer later in the game against the Cougars. Against Stanford earlier this year, he hit two, two-run homers in a doubleheader at Sunken Diamond Mar. 6.

BEARS FEATURE YOUNG, TALENTED INFIELD: The Bears feature one of the youngest infields in the nation as two of their four infielders are freshmen - second baseman Josh Satin and first baseman Mike Van Winden. Satin, a redshirt freshman, was high school teammates with Boesch at Harvard-Westlake High School in Los Angeles and has put up impressive offensive numbers. He is batting .361 (7th in Pac-10) with 15 doubles and a team-leading 38 RBI. Satin also has a team-high 26 multiple-hit games, is hitting an impressive .365 against Pac-10 competition and has a team-best .437 average (31-for-71) with runners in scoring position. Van Winden, also a redshirt freshman, has proven to be an extremely valuable addition as well, batting .273 with 11 doubles, a triple, a home run, 25 RBI and a team-leading 29 walks. This season, he has knocked in game-winning RBI doubles at Long Beach State and versus Washington State, hit the game-winning single in the 11th inning at Washington, had the game-tying RBI against Arizona State and scored the game-winning run against UC Irvine. Sophomore Brett Munster (started last four games) and true freshman Kyle Spraker (44 starts) have handled the majority of the shortstop duties for the Bears this season, while senior third baseman Matt Einspahr (.296, team-leading 38 RBI) has started 53 of 54 games at third base.

SENIOR RELIEVERS Travis Talbott AND Matt Swanson SHINE: Cal's senior left-hander Travis Talbott (5-1, eight saves) and senior right-hander Matt Swanson (6-2, two saves) have been two of the Pac-10's top relievers this season, combining for a 11-3 record with 10 saves. Talbott has earned saves versus Loyola Marymount, Long Beach State (two), San Francisco, Hawaii-Hilo, Nevada, UCLA, and San Jose State, and has wins versus Saint Mary's, Washington State, Arizona State, UC Davis and Stanford. He is fourth in the conference with eight saves, has a 1.36 ERA and opponents are batting .211 against him, only giving up six earned runs in 39.7 innings. Talbott is also fourth in the Pac-10 with 28 appearances. Team captain Swanson is second in the Pac-10 with 29 appearances and has an impressive 1.52 ERA to go along with his 6-2 record with two saves. He has 37 strikeouts in 47.3 innings and has only yielded eight earned runs all year. Swanson has saves versus Pacific and Sacramento State, and picked up victories over UC Irvine, San Francisco, Nevada, Washington and two wins over Stanford.

VALUABLE TRANSFER DWORKIS: An obvious key addition to the Bears' pitching staff is senior transfer Eric Dworkis, who played at Gonzaga from 2002-04. Dworkis has produced some of Cal's best pitching performances in recent history with the 10-inning, six hit, one run, no walk, five strikeout effort versus Stanford May 7, and a complete-game, four-hit, one walk, 11 strikeout shutout of USC Apr. 24. He was also outstanding Feb. 26 at Saint Mary's, throwing a complete game with six hits, one run, one walk with 10 strikeouts. Last year at Gonzaga, Dworkis was 8-4 with five complete games, earning second team All-West Coast Conference honors.

BEARS HAVE A FLAIR FOR THE DRAMATIC: The 2005 Bears have won four extra-inning games, have captured two road games in the top of the ninth inning, and scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth for a come-from-behind Pac-10 win. Cal won its first game of the season in extra-innings when freshman second baseman Josh Satin had a two-out single in the bottom of the 11th inning to defeat UC Irvine, 5-4, Feb. 5. On Feb. 13 at Loyola Marymount, sophomore left fielder Chris Errecart had a three-run homer in the ninth inning to defeat the Lions, 8-5. On Feb. 20, freshman Mike Van Winden had the game-winning two-run double in the ninth inning at Long Beach State, followed by junior right-hander Alex Trafton forcing a double play with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth. Senior designated hitter James Holder had a two-out single in the bottom of the 12th to defeat Saint Mary's, 5-4, Feb. 25. Down 3-2, Van Winden and senior Matt Einspahr combined to defeat Arizona State on Apr. 10 as Van Winden tied the game with a hard-hit single, followed by Einspahr's game-winner in a come-from-behind 4-3 victory. Another exciting win for the Bears was freshman catcher Travis Howell's squeeze bunt in the bottom of the 11th to defeat Stanford, 2-1 on May 7.
