Sam Warburg and KC Corkery Post First Round Doubles Victory
May 26, 2005
College Station, Tex. - The No. 2 seeded duo of senior Sam Warburg and junior KC Corkery dropped the first set of their first round match against Oklahoma State's Daniel Byrnes and Mark Van Elden, but rebounded to win the next two sets and advance to the second round of the NCAA Doubles Championship Tournament.
The reigning NCAA champion tandem of Warburg and Corkery dropped a 6-4 decision in the first set against the Oklahoma State duo. The Cardinal pairing bounced back immediately, posting 6-1 victories in the second and third sets to record the win and advance to the second round of the 32-team tournament.
Warburg and Corkery will meet familiar opponents in second round play, as the duo is slated to take on Washington's Daniel Chu and Alex Slovic. The Husky pairing earned a hard fought first round victory over Mississippi State's Luis Carvalho and Jose-Carlos Pinto on Thursday 5-7, 6-3, 6-4. The two duos have met twice already this season, with each tandem winning once. The Husky duo topped Warburg and Corkery in a dual match in March, but the Cardinal pairing topped Chu and Slovic for the Pac-10 Doubles Championship in April.
