Softball Drops 4-1 Decision to Georgia in Super Regional Opener
May 27, 2005
LOS ANGELES - Emily Zaplatosch homered in the sixth inning, but visiting Georgia used a pair of two-run homers in the fifth and sixth innings as the Bulldogs took game one of this weekend's NCAA Super Regional with a 4-1 decision over UCLA on Friday night at Easton Stadium.
UGA improves to 55-13 while UCLA falls to 34-18.
UCLA freshman Anjelica Selden was in control the opening four innings, allowing just one base runner while fanning five of the first 12 batters. UCLA had their chances in the opening frames, but the Bruins stranded four runners in the first three innings. Ashley Herrera opened the third inning with a single to center and advanced to second on Andrea Duran's sac bunt. A walk to Tara Henry gave UCLA runners at first and second with one out, but UGA hurler Michelle Green fanned Caitlin Benyi for the second out and got Zaplatosch to ground out to end the threat.
UGA broke through in the fifth as Katie Vickers drew a one-out walk and, after a fielder's choice, came home on a two-run homer to left field by UGA third baseman Jessica Doucette. The Bulldogs added two more runs in the sixth, opening the inning with a bunt single before right fielder Courtney Knight launched one on top of the batting cages beyond the right field wall for a 4-0 lead. That would be enough as Green allowed just one hit (Zaplatosch's homer) over the final four innings as the Bulldogs took the opener of the weekend series.
Selden (23-12) allowed six hits and four runs while walking one and fanning seven in the loss. Green (27-3) allowed just three hits and one run with one walk and six strikeouts for UGA.
UCLA must now win the final two games of the weekend series vs. UGA to advance to the Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City. The Bruins and Bulldogs play game two of the series on Saturday night at 6 p.m. with game three (if necessary) slated for 8:30 p.m. Saturday night.
