Tennessee Defeats Stanford 2-0 In Opening Super Regional Game

Stanford, Calif. - The fourth-ranked Stanford softball team dropped the opening game of the NCAA Super Regional, 2-0, to No. 11 Tennessee this evening before a record crowd of 1,068 at Boyd and Jill Smith Family Stadium. The Cardinal fall to 43-15 on the year while the Lady Vols improve to 63-13.
Tennessee scored an unearned run early then a single by Katherine Card scored Lindsay Schutlzer in the top of the first.
The Lady Vols tacked on an insurance run in the top of the sixth on a solo homerun by Card to centerfield.
That was all the offense that Tennessee would need as pitcher Monica Abbott (46-7) picked up the win in the circle, scattering two hits over seven scoreless innings with 12 strikeouts. Freshman hurler Becky McCullough (21-7) took the loss for Stanford, allowing two runs (one earned on four hits over seven innings of work.
Sophomore leftfielder Jackie Rinehart recorded both of the Cardinal's hits on the evening, going 2-for-3 at the plate.
For the Lady Vols, Katherine Card went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored.
The two teams will be back in action tomorrow at 1 p.m. PT at Smith Family Stadium. Game three (if necessary) will be played at approximately 3:30 p.m. or 35 minutes after the conclusion of the 1 p.m game. The winner of the best two-of-three series will advance to the NCAA Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City, Okla.
