Baylor Defeats Cal, 4-1; Forces Third Super Regional Game

May 28, 2005

WACO, Texas - The 15th-seeded Baylor softball team scored four runs in the sixth inning to defeat second-seeded California, 4-1, Saturday evening and force a third-and-deciding game at the Waco Super Regional.

Game No. 3 will begin at approximately 9:40 p.m. CST. The winner earns a berth in the 2005 Women's College World Series. The loser's season is over.

The game, originally scheduled for 1 p.m., was moved first to 2 p.m. and then rolled back to 7:30 p.m. because of day-long precipitation in central Texas.

The Bears (51-13) scored their only run on a first-inning leadoff homer by third baseman Vicky Galindo.

Prior to the sixth inning, Cal starter Kelly Anderson (28-8) was in complete control. A day after she three-hit Baylor to help Cal to an 8-0 victory in game No. 1, Anderson allowed just two hits through five and one-third innings on Friday. Baylor (51-13) threatened just once early on, leaving runners at the corners in the third.

With one out in the Baylor sixth, second baseman Carrie Leerberg singled. Leerberg stole second before the next batter, first baseman Tessa Lyman, singled to right center field. Cal right fielder Alex Sutton retrieved the ball and threw home in an effort to get Leerberg. The toss was on line and in time, but Bears' catcher Haley Woods was cited for obstruction for blocking the plate without first having the ball.

The earned run was the first Anderson had allowed in 31.2 postseason innings.

Anderson then allowed an infield single to third baseman Stephanie Pomes and walked shortstop Kim Wilmoth, loading the bases. Catcher Melissa Huffhines then unloaded a bases-clearing triple over Sutton's head for the winning margin.

Anderson, who struck out four, fell to 28-8 and suffered her first loss of the postseason. Baylor starter Cristin Vitek improved to 13-5.

Second baseman Jessica Pamanian collected three of Cal's five hits.
