Stanford Evens Series With 14-3 Win Over USC

LOS ANGELES - Chris Minaker went 3-for-6 with two doubles and four RBI Saturday as the No. 25 Stanford Cardinal evened its Pac-10 Conference series with a 14-3 win against the No. 24/21 USC Trojans. Jeff Gilmore went the distance for the Cardinal, scattering 12 hits and allowing three runs.
Stanford improves to 32-22 on the season and 12-11 in Pac-10 play while USC falls to 36-19 overall and 14-9 in the Pac-10.
Defensively, Stanford also had a triple play in the game. With runners at first and second, USC's Roberto Lopez hit a sharp ground ball to Sorgi at third. Sorgi tagged third and completed the 5-4-3 triple play.
The Cardinal scored twice in the first off USC starter Anthony Encinas (6-4), who allowed six runs in 3 1/3 innings. USC answered when All-America catcher Jeff Clement hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the inning with his 12th of the season and 43rd in his career to tie him for third with Eric Munson on the school's all-time list.
Ben Summerhays and Adam Sorgi also had three hits on the afternoon for the Cardinal. Catcher John Hester went 2-for-3 with four RBI.
Stanford broke the game open with four runs in the fifth on RBI singles from Sorgi and Minaker and a two-run double from Hester. The Cardinal added two more runs in the seventh and five in the ninth.
