May 30, 2005

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State is the No. 8 seed in the 64-team field for the NCAA baseball championships, it was announced Monday. The Beavers will meet Ohio State in the first round of the NCAA Baseball Regionals on Friday at 5 p.m. at the Beavers' Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. The other teams in the Corvallis Regional will be St. John's and Virginia.

Oregon State is the No. 1 seed in the Corvallis Regional followed by Virginia, St. John's and Ohio State. The double-elimination tournament runs Friday through Sunday or Monday, depending on whether a seventh game is needed to determine a winner.

Oregon State (41-9 overall, 19-5 Pacific-10), which won the Pacific-10 championship, is ranked second nationally in this week's Sports Weekly/ESPN coaches poll and by Baseball America magazine and third by Collegiate Baseball newspaper. Ohio State (39-18, 17-12 Big Ten), St. John's (39-16, 19-4 Big East) and Virginia (41-18, 14-14 Atlantic Coast) are all unranked but the Buckeyes and Cavaliers received votes in the coaches poll.

The 64-team field has eight national seeds; no team that is nationally seeded would meet another nationally seeded team until the College World Series.

OSU's last trip to the NCAAs in 1986 saw the Beavers place third at the Midwest Regional at Oklahoma State, going 2-2. OSU lost to Arkansas 4-3, beat Richmond 7-1, beat Arkansas 1-0 and lost to Stanford 10-7.
