Softball Heads to Women's College World Series
May 30, 2005
After winning five elimination games in the last two weekends to advance to the Women's College World Series, the two-time defending NCAA Champion UCLA softball team travels to Oklahoma City, Okla., to continue its quest to become the second team in NCAA Softball history to win three consecutive titles. UCLA also accomplished the feat in the 1988, `89 and `90 seasons.
The 2005 season marks UCLA's 21st trip to the WCWS. 1986 and 1998 are the only two years in which the Bruins have not participated in the WCWS. UCLA holds 10 NCAA titles, and an 11th NCAA crown (1995) was vacated. The Bruins also won the 1978 AIAW Championship, giving UCLA a total of 11 softball National Championships. A 22nd apperance in 1995 has been vacated.
UCLA's first opponent at the 2005 WCWS will be Pac-10 rival California. The Bruins and Golden Bears have met in the last two NCAA Championship games with UCLA winning both meetings to earn Back-to-Back NCAA titles. UCLA and Cal also met in the opening game of the 2003 WCWS when seventh-seeded UCLA lost 7-3 in 10 innings to second-seeded Cal, a game in which the Bruins committed six errors, including three in the 10th inning and allowed three unearned runs in that inning. UCLA went on to win five straight games and the NCAA title as Keira Goerl pitched a nine-inning no-hitter on Championship Monday.
