Getting to Know Cal's Varsity 8

BERKELEY - As the California crew prepares for this weekend's IRA championships, several members of the varsity 8 answered selected questions about themselves and their Cal careers.

Brian Schroeder
Position: Varsity - Coxswain
Favorite Movie: The Shawshank Redemption
Favorite Athlete:: Mario Lemieux
Favorite Sport (other than crew): Sailing
Favorite Band: Radiohead/Deftones

How did you get involved with crew? I started coxing in the ninth grade for my high school team.
Why did you choose to come to Cal? Excellent crew and computer science programs.
What is your greatest achievement in crew? Winning the IRAs my freshman year.
What do you do in your spare time? Computer programming, skateboarding, body boarding
The one thing most people don't know about me is... I used to be big into sailing.
What are you career plans after you finish school? Plan to work in Manhattan for a few years and then look for a more permanent residence.

Elliot Bertinetti
Position: Varsity - Seven Seat

How did you get involved with crew? Watching the Oarsome Foursome win Gold in Barcelona in year 2 then rowing at a top program in Sydney.
Why did you choose to come to Cal? The climate is very similar to Sydney, I knew other rowers at Cal and at no other school do you have the same meshing of academics and athletics.
What do you most like about being a Cal student? Being close to everything surf, sun, snow, mountains, valleys, city...if you want to do something, all I have to do is look and I will find it.
What is your greatest achievement in crew? Winning IRA's last year in the freshman boat because of the satisfaction associated with the pay off of a year's work
What do you do in your spare time? Look after my fish! Plan and build power tool drag racer.
The one thing most people don't know about me is... I hate peanut butter and all different shades of red.
What are you career plans after you finish school? I want to get a teaching qualification at Oxford in the UK then go home to coach and teach at my high school. I would then consider maybe going into politics.

Marko Knezevic
Position: Varsity - Four Seat

How did you get involved with crew? One day my friend asked me to go with him to the local club in Belgrade. I went there and I stayed there.
Why did you choose to come to Cal? Because of great academic opportunities and great rowing program
What do you most like about being a Cal student? I can go to school and practice at the same time and the beautiful campus.
What is your greatest achievement in crew? There are a lot of them, but the most important one to me is the silver medal at the Under 23's (2002), bronze medal at under 23's (2003) At Cal stroke the freshmen boat that won IRA's and had an undefeated season.
What do you do in your spare time? Sleep and work.
The one thing most people don't know about me is ... That they never going to find out what they don't know about me
What are your career plans after you finish school? to race for my national team and compete at the 2008 Olympics

Rory Tuttle
Position: Varsity - Stroke Seat

How did you get involved with crew? I was recruited to row for Marin Rowing Association my junior year and rowed two years under Jim Andersen. It was Jum's passion for the sport and the team's great morale and success that made me fall in love with the sport.
Why did you choose to come to Cal? Cal is the obvious choice for anyone who wants to take their rowing to the highest collegiate level and both Coach Gladstone and Bone are the men to make sure you win doing it. Cal being rated the #1 University in the world now is also a very effective recruiting tool.
What do you most like about being a Cal student? Knowing that I'm smarter than 99.99% of the world's population
What is your greatest achievement in crew? Making the Varsity 8 at Cal
What do you do in your spare time? Work on my abs and my tasty rhythm
The one thing most people don't know about me is ... I have always been my parents' favorite of three sons.
What are your career plans after you finish school? Wait for Deaglan to win the Presidency so that I can live on a couch in the White House.

Troy Kepper
Position: Varsity - Two Seat

Favorite Cal Class: History of modern warfare
How did you get involved with crew? I grew up in Florida around water sports and my high school had a team. I have been rowing ever since.
Why did you choose to come to Cal? Rowing year round with good weather, Gladstone teaches efficiency and has a good history. UC Berkeley is a great university.
What do you most like about being a Cal student? I am taller than 98% of the student body.
What is your greatest achievement in crew? JV National Champions in 2003
What do you do in your spare time? Squirrel fishing, trading pokemon cards
The one thing most people don't know about me is ... When I think of red, I think of Bert and Ernie with a toy fire truck
What are your career plans after you finish school? More rowing, more schooling.

Vaclav Vochoska
Position: Varsity - Three Seat

Favorite Band: The Rolling Stones
Favorite Cal Class: History 103 - European Land Warfare with Prof. Tom Barnes
How did you get involved with crew? My dad was a national team rower, got 2 bronze Olympic medals at the 1976 Montreal and 1980 Moscow Olympics. So I pretty much grew up in the boathouse.
Why did you choose to come to Cal? The best crew program in the Nation, the best university. It was a simple decision.
What do you most like about being a Cal student? I really enjoy hanging out at the Golden Bear Cafe
What is your greatest achievement in crew? PAC-10 Champion in the Varsity 8+ event, competing for the Czech National Team at World Championships between 1998-2002
What do you do in your spare time? Watch Man on Fire, Play PGA Tour 2005 with Rory Tuttle, I also do some bird watching with Pete Maiden, Oh, and I also send close to 700 text messages from my cell phone each month. But, I'm from Europe so its quite normal.
The one thing most people don't know about me is... I am a very extroverted person. I have no secrets. Everybody knows that I have 8 alarm clocks and I set them all every night.
What are your career plans after you finish school? I will do some more rowing, probably until the 2008 Olympics in China. After that I will start looking for a job. Since I just got my commercial drivers license, I was thinking about becoming 'The UPS Guy' or AC Transit Bus Operator. Maybe I will go to grad school, though, and become a politician instead.
