Entire Husky Men's Fleet Advances at IRA Regatta

June 2, 2005

CHERRY HILL, N.J. - The Washington junior varsity eight crew was beaten for the first time, but still advanced to the semfinals along with the other three Husky boats that competed Thursday during the first day of the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) men's national championships on the Cooper River.

The entire UW fleet will compete Friday morning in semifinal races that determine the field for Saturday's six-boat grand finals.

The Huskies' fourth-ranked varsity eight defeated No. 5 Northeastern to earn a berth in Friday's 12-boat semifinal field. The freshman eight also rowed into the semifinals with a heat victory. The junior varsity eight finished one seat behind Wisconsin in a race that sent the top-two finishers directly to the semifinals.

UW's entry in the open fours finished second to Northeastern. The three heat winners automatically earned grand finals positions. The Huskies will compete in the repechage Friday to determine the remaining three grand final qualifers.

(Following are Thursday's results from the IRA Championships. A more detailed recap, including quotes, will be available on this page later this afternoon.)
