June 2, 2005

Kristin Bixel became the first member; in the four year history of UCLA women's rowing; to be selected as a member to rowing's First Team All-America. The Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) announced the 2005 All-America Teams today, June 2. The awards, which are presented by Pocock, recognize the outstanding accomplishments of female rowers and coxswains for the spring season.

Forty-five student athletes were honored as All-Americans, with 20 first-team selections, and 25 second-team selections. All twenty first team selections were participants in the NCAA Championships held last weekend, as well as thirteen of the twenty five members of the second team.

Bixel, a senior co-captain, joined the women's rowing team and learned to row as a sophomore. She has been a member of the varsity eight crew her junior and senior years. She was recognized as a CRCA National Scholar Athlete in 2004, and was also named to the Pac-10 All-Academic team that year. In addition, she has been named to the Director's Honor Roll every quarter during her rowing career. In the fall she will be attending medical school in San Francisco. Bixel has previously been honored this year as a 2005 National Scholar Athlete and as a member of the 2005 All-Regional Team by the CRCA.
