Softball Downs California, 2-1, In Women's College World Series Opener
June 2, 2005
OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - A home run from Ashley Herrera and an RBI single from Krista Colburn provided UCLA's two runs on the day, as UCLA posted a 2-1 victory over California on the first day of the 2005 Women's College Series in Oklahoma City, Okla. UCLA will advance in the winners bracket to face Tennessee at 7 pm CDT (5 pm Pacific Time) on Friday, June 3. Tennessee advanced earlier in the day after posting a 1-0 victory over Arizona.
The Golden Bears scored first with an unearned run in the bottom of the third inning. After a one-out single from Vicky Galindo provided the Bears with their third base runner on the day, Galindo stole second before going to third on a ground out by Lindsay James. Kaleo Eldredge then reached on an errant throw to first base by UCLA starting pitcher Anjelica Selden, scoring Galindo to give Cal a 1-0 lead after three innings.
The Bruins tied the game in the top of the fifth inning when sophomore left fielder Ashley Herrera connected on her third home run of the season, a shot down the left field line.
In the top of the sixth inning, Caitlin Benyi led off the inning and reached on a Cal fielding error. She would advance to second on a single up the middle by Emily Zaplatosch, a hit that chased Cal starting pitcher Kelly Anderson from the game and brought in Kristina Thorson. Thorson's first batter faced was Jodie Legaspi, who popped up a bunt that wound up dropping in the infield dirt for a fielders choice, as Benyi was thrown out at third base on the play.
After Thorson's first strikeout of the game, a wild pitch advanced UCLA's base runners to second and third before freshman right fielder Krista Colburn connected on a single to shallow center field, scoring Zaplatosch to give the Bruins a 2-1 lead.
That was all the offense that Selden would need, as she finished with three strikeouts and one unearned run on the day, scattering three Cal hits during her seven innings in the circle.
The Bruins will advance to play Tennessee, 1-0 winners over Arizona earlier today, on Friday evening at 7 pm Central Time. The game will be broadcast live in high definition on ESPN2.
