Stanford's NCAA Regional Pre-Press Conference Quotes

June 2, 2005

Waco, Tex. - Stanford head coach Mark Marquess and players Jeff Gilmore and Jed Lowrie commented on the Division I Baseball Championship and the upcoming Waco regional during a press conference at Baylor Ballpark on Thursday.

Stanford (32-23) is the third seed in the regional and will open postseason play versus second-seed No. 24 TCU (40-18) on Friday, June 3 (2 pm, CT/12 pm, PT). Host Baylor (39-21) is the top seed in the regional being played at Baylor Ballpark and the No. 4 national seed. The Bears also open regional play on Friday (7 pm, CT/5 pm, PT) versus fourth-seeded Texas-San Antonio (27-32).

Opening Statement
'On behalf of Stanford and our baseball program, we are thrilled to be here. It's a great opportunity for us. We're going to be playing in a beautiful ballpark and in a strong regional field. We're looking forward to it.'

On A Strong Matchup Between Third-Seeded Stanford And Second-Seeded TCU Friday

'(TCU probable starter) Lance Broadway has excellent numbers, and he's well-deserving of the accolades he has received. It should be a great pitching matchup with (Stanford probable starter) Jeff Gilmore. It should be a great college baseball game with two outstanding pitchers.'

On The Field At The Waco Regional
'It's a tough regional, but every regional is tough. Even if a team has a .500 record that means they probably won their tournament, and they wouldn't have gotten here unless they are playing their best baseball. That's a team you're a little leery to play, because everything is going their way. A lot of things can happen in a short series, and that's what regionals are. This is a strong regional, but I can't think of any easy regionals that are easy, because all the teams are playing their best baseball at this time of the year.'

On The NCAA Division I Baseball Championship
'It's a new season. No matter what your record in the regular season, you just can't lose two games. It's as simple as that.'

On College Baseball
'There's so much parity in college baseball. It's exciting but a little tough for the coaches because it's very unpredictable.'

On Playing On The Road In A Regional
'We're thrilled to be in this spot. No matter what seed you are, if you're in the tournament, then you're in the tournament. Everyone's record is 0-0 at this point. Last year, we were arguably the best team in the country at this point and three days later, four games into the regional our season was over. Everyone's on a level playing field right now, and we're thrilled to be in Texas against good competition. We've got a beautiful ballpark (to play in) and couldn't be happier to be here.'

On Playing On The Road In A Regional
'We're playing hot teams that have won or done very well in their conference tournaments. The competition should be great no matter what records are. We just have to play like we're 0-0 and try to go out and make some nice in this tournament against some good competition.'
