Erike Hansen Named Assistant Swimming Coach

Head Swimming Coach Cyndi Gallagher has announced the hiring of two-time Olympian and former Texas Longhorn Erika Hansen for the position of Assistant Coach. Hansen will take the place of fourth year coach Greg Meehan who has left UCLA for a head coaching job at the University of the Pacific.

'I am excited to be a part of the Bruin Family, said Hansen. 'I have a great love of the sport of swimming and hope that I can share my enthusiasm and experience to help the team re ach its full potential. You (the team) are lucky to have such a great woman, Cyndi, as your leader and I can't wait to be a part of the Bruin vision for the future.'

Hansen comes to UCLA after serving for one year as an assistant coach for the women and men's team at the University of Maryland. While with the Terps, Hansen helped coach the women to their first ever ACC Championship, as well as one first-time NCAA All-American and one first-time NCAA Championships competitor.

Prior to UM, she was an assistant coach at the University of Southern California for six years, beginning in 1997.

Prior to her time at USC, she coached at the Jordan, Jager and Evans Gold Medal Swim Clinics and served as a graduate assistant coach at the University of Florida from 1994-96.

Hansen was a member of the U. S. Olympic Team in 1988 (400 IM) and in 1992 (400/800 Free, 400 IM). At the Barcelona Olympics (1992), Hansen placed fourth in the 400 Free, seventh in the 800 Free and 10th in the 400 IM.

Hansen was also a five-time National Champion in 1984, 1985, 1990 and 1991.

As a collegiate swimmer, Hansen spent her freshman year at the University of Georgia where she won the 1650 Freestyle at NCAA's. After transferring to the University of Texas, Hansen won two individual NCAA titles (1650 Free/500 Free) and helped the Longhorns win two NCAA team championships. Hansen also earned the Longhorns' Most Improved Swimmer Award in 1992, was a Barbara Jordan Scholarship Award Recipient in 1992 and the Southwestern Conference's Most Valuable Swimmer in 1991.

Hansen graduation from the University of Texas in 1993 with a degree in Psychology, and received her Masters Degree in Sport Management from the University of Florida, where she also trained and coached.
