Spradlin Shuts Down Pepperdine In USC's 7-3 NCAA Regional Win

June 3, 2005

LONG BEACH, Calif. - Junior Jack Spradlin (Bonita, Calif./Eastlake HS/Southwestern College) pitched eight strong innings Friday as the No. 21/18 USC Trojans defeated the Pepperdine Waves, 7-3, in game one of the 2005 NCAA First-Round Regional at Blair Field. The junior left-hander allowed just one run through the first seven innings after being staked to a four-run lead in the first inning.

The Trojans (38-19) advance to face the winner of tonight's Long Beach State-Rhode Island game in a 7 p.m. contest tomorrow. Pepperdine (38-22) will face the loser of tonight's game in an elimination game tomorrow at 3 p.m. USC is now 9-3 all-time in postseason play against Pepperdine.

'I think we got a really good performance out of Jack and he gave us a chance to win today,' said USC head coach Mike Gillespie.

Spradlin (6-3) allowed three runs on eight hits with a walk and four strikeouts. Sophomore Paul Koss recorded his 12th save of the season when he pitched to one batter in the ninth with the possible tying run on deck for the Waves and runners at first and second.

Trojan freshman first baseman Matt Cusick (Mission Viejo/Santa Margarita HS) went 2-for-2 with a key two-run double in the first and three RBI for the Trojans. Junior Baron Frost went 1-for-3 to extend his hitting streak to 11 games.

Pepperdine starter Paul Coleman (9-3), who earned 2005 West Coast Conference Pitcher of the Year honors, lasted just three innings, allowing six runs (four earned) on seven hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

Blake Sharpe led off the bottom of the first with a single to right, but Coleman struck out Billy Hart and retired All-America catcher Jeff Clement for the second out. Cyle Hankerd singled to center on a full-count pitch and Frost drew a walk to load the bases before Cusick hit a 1-0 pitch down the left field for his two-run double. Hector Estrella was hit by a pitch and freshman Roberto Lopez then hit Coleman's pitch up the middle for a two-run single and a 4-0 Trojans' lead.

Spradlin retired the first nine batters before the Waves scored in the fourth. David Uribes opened the inning with a walk and moved to second on an infield bunt single by Luke Salas. Catcher Chad Tracy, the WCC Player of the Year, popped up for the first out, but first baseman Steve Kleen delivered an RBI single to left. Spradlin made a key play when he picked off Salas at second, costing the Waves a run when Danny Worth singled and moved Kleen to third. Donald Brown took a called third strike as Spradlin stranded two runners with USC maintaining a 4-1 advantage.

Tracy went 0-for-4 on the afternoon for the Waves, striking out once and hitting three fly ball outs all on the first pitch.

Coleman hit Sharpe to lead off the USC fourth. Hart attempted a sacrifice bunt to Coleman, who threw the ball over the head of Kleen at first as the Trojans got runners at second and third with no outs. With the infield drawn in, Clement hit a high fly ball to shallow center that Worth was unable to get to score another run. After Hankerd was hit by a pitch to load the bases, reliever Doug Konoske entered for Coleman. Konoske struck out Frost, but Cusick hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Hart.

Sharpe singled to left in the fifth to score pinch-runner Zack Kalter for a 7-1 lead, but the Waves got two in the eighth off Steve Kleen's two-run homer, his eighth of the season, off Spradlin. The Waves put two runners on base in the ninth, but Uribes hit a ground ball to Koss, who underhanded the ball to first to end the game.
