Bruins Advance to WCWS Semifinal With 3-1 Win Over Tennessee
June 4, 2005
OKLAHOMA CITY, OK - Tara Henry scored two runs and gunned a Tennessee base runner to open the top of the seventh inning as UCLA defeated the Lady Vols by a 3-1 score on Friday evening in Oklahoma City. With the win, the Bruins (38-18) advance to Sunday's semifinal.
UCLA wasted no time in touching Tennessee All-America pitcher Monica Abbott for three hits and a run in the bottom of the first inning. Tara Henry started the rally with a one-out slap-hit infield single, went to second on a Caitlin Benyi ground out and came around to score on a single up the middle by Emily Zaplatosch.
The Lady Vols tied the game with one out in the fourth inning on a solo home run to left by Tonya Callahan, her 10th of the season.
UCLA re-took the lead in the fifth inning with another one-out rally. Henry drew a one-out walk from Abbott, the only walk issued by either pitcher in the game, and advanced to second when Zaplaotsch reached on an error by Tennessee 3B Kristi Durant. Henry would score from second base for the second time in the game when Jodie Legaspi put an RBI single into right field for the go-ahead run.
The Bruins added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth as Krista Colburn led off the inning with a single to left before being replaced by pinch runner Danesha Adams. Adams was sacrificed to second by Lisa Dodd and scored on a ball hit by Ashley Herrera back to Abbott. Abbott had difficulty fielding the ball, then had an errant throw to first base, allowing Adams to score her second run of the postseason.
In the circle, Bruin freshman Anjelica Selden tossed her 24th double-figure strikeout game of her career, posting 10 K's without walking a batter.
UCLA advances to the national semifinal against either Arizona, California or the loser of the Michigan/Texas game. The Bruins will not know their opponent until the third game of Saturday's four-game schedule is completed. Whatever team UCLA faces will have to beat the Bruins twice to advance, while UCLA needs just one more win to advance to the Championship for the third consecutive year.
