June 6, 2005
TEMPE, Ariz. (www.TheSunDevils.com) -- Arizona State juniors Travis Buck and Erik Averill headlined a list of seven Sun Devil baseball players that were named to the 2005 All-Pac-10 Baseball Academic team. A student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 overall GPA and either be a starter or significant contributor.
Arizona State's seven selections included two on the first team (Averill, Buck), two on the second team (Tuffy Gosewisch, Ty Marotz) and three honorable mention selections (Seth Dhaenens, Joe Persichina, Eric Williams). The seven selections are tied for the most among Pac-10 member schools and the most by an ASU baseball squad since having six in 2002.
Buck (Richland, Wash.) and Averill (Orange, Calif.) were also both named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District 8 team and Gosewisch (Scottsdale, Ariz.) was a second-team selection.
Buck was named to Pac-10 All-Academic team for the first time in his career and carries a 3.31 GPA as a management major. He is also a two-time All-Pac-10 selection on the field and was recently named a third-team All-American by Collegiate Baseball. Heading into the Super Regionals, Buck leads ASU hitting .389 (100-for-257) with 22 doubles and 24 stolen bases. He leads the team with 33 multi-hit games and became only the 21st player in ASU history to record 100 hits in a season.
Averill carries an impressive 3.52 overall GPA as a finance major and makes his second appearance on the All-Pac-10 Academic team after being a second-team selection last season. The left-handed pitcher leads the pitching staff going 9-3 with a 3.77 ERA and has recorded four complete games. He was named the co-Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA Tempe Regional with his complete-game win over No. 1 seed Coastal Carolina.
Gosewisch makes his third appearance on the All-Academic team and his second straight as a second-team selection. The senior catcher has a 3.21 GPA as a marketing student. On the field he has started all 59 games this season and is hitting .323 (71-for-220) with 67 RBI.
Marotz (Crystal Lake, Ill.) was named a second-team selection with a 3.32 GPA as a interdisciplinary studies major. On the field the right-hander is 2-1 with a 4.18 ERA in 16 appearances. He has struck out 29 and walked only five in 28.0 innings.
