Women's Basketball Begins Practices for Summer Tour

June 7, 2005

The UCLA women's basketball team began practices on Sunday, June 5 in preparation for a summer tour of Australia. Head coach Kathy Olivier will lead the Bruins on a four-game swing through Sydney and Cairnes, Australia from June 22 to July 2.

UCLA is expected to play the Australian Junior National team and three Australian Club teams on the trip. All players from the 2004-05 squad are eligible to participate in the games, however, the NCAA rules prohibit incoming freshmen from taking part in the trip. The NCAA rules allow for a total of 10 practice sessions prior to the trip.

UCLA finished the 2004-05 season with a 16-12 record. All five starters return for the Bruins next season, including the top 10 scorers and the top seven rebounders. Senior-to-be guards Nikki Blue (17.0 ppg, 5.0 rpg) and Lisa Willis (16.3 ppg, 6.9 rpg) were each named first-team All-Pac-10 last season. In addition, both Noelle Quinn and Julia Pitts, who were injured last season, have returned to full health and are practicing with the team and are expected to play in the games over in Australia.
