Grimes Named USTFCCCA West Region Coach of Year

June 8, 2005

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Washington State University assistant track and field coach Kris Grimes was named the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) West Region women's jumps/combined events Coach of the Year Tuesday evening at a banquet preceding the NCAA Div. I Track & Field Championships at Sacramento.

Grimes, in his seventh year at WSU and his 17th season of collegiate coaching, has coached seven Cougars to All-American status. Two WSU pole vaulters, Tyson Byers and Tamara Diles, are competing at the NCAA Championships this week. Last month WSU's Robin Mikesh won the women's high jump at the Pacific-10 Conference Championships.

The USTFCCCA selected four assistant coaches, combining events, for each gender in each of the four regions for coach of the year honors. The national coaches organization also gave members black wristbands to be worn on their right hand during the four days of the NCAA Championships as a protest of the University of Utah's May announcement dropping its men's track team.
