June 8, 2005
Former UCLA All-American Tom Pernice, Jr., earned a spot into the 105th U.S. Open, June 16-19 at Pinehurst #2.
Pernice, a 23-year PGA TOUR veteran, won the sectional qualifier at Hallbrook CC in Kansas City, MO on Tuesday. He posted scores of 70-69--139 and earned the only spot in a field of 26.
Pernice was a two-time honorable mention All-American for the Bruins in 1980 and '81. As a professional, he has won more than $6 million.
Pernice was the fourth former UCLA golfer to qualify for the U.S. Open this week. The other three -- Scott McCarron, Brandt Jobe and John Merrick -- qualified Monday at Columbus, OH. Former All-American Corey Pavin has an exemption by virtue of his 1995 U.S. Open victory at Shinnecock Hills CC.
