Head Men's Golf Coach Conrad Ray To Play In U.S. Open
June 9, 2005
Stanford, Calif. - Stanford head golf coach Conrad Ray has been tapped to play in the U.S. Open at Pinehurst after Darren Clarke of Northern Ireland withdrew today.
Ray, of Palo Alto, Calif., was the first alternate from the Tarzana, Calif., sectional in early June. Ray shot rounds of 71-69 for a two-round total of 140.
'I'm very excited to represent Stanford and looking forward to playing in my first U.S. Open,' said Ray. 'I'm hoping to play well, hit my shots and just see what the course gives me. Maybe I'll catch up with a few old friends as well.'
Conrad recently guided the Stanford men's golf team to their first NCAA Championship appearance since 2001. The Cardinal tied for 18th overall while freshman Rob Grube tied for fifth individually, becoming the first Stanford golfer to record a top five finish since 1998.
The U.S. Open begins next Thursday at Pinehurst No. 2 in North Carolina.
