Eight Trojan Track & Field Athletes Named To Pac-10 All-Academic Team

LOS ANGELES--USC women's pole vaulter Melissa Astete headlines a list of eight Trojan track and field athletes named to the 2005 Pac-10 All-Academic team today.
Astete, a business major, was a first-team honoree for the third consecutive season, posting a 3.90 grade-point average. Earlier in the season she was USC's 2005 Willis O. Hunter Award winner for highest cumulative GPA among graduating senior athletes.
To be eligible for selection to the Pac-10 All-Academic team, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 overall GPA and be either a starter or significant contributor.
Men's pole vaulter Jacob Hamman, a junior architecture major with a 3.72 GPA, was also a first-team selection. The other men's track athlete selected to the team was senior 800m runner Anthony Heckman, who received academic honorable mention for the second time.
USC's female track and field athletes making the Pac-10 All-Academic second team are senior 800m runner Gina Clayton (American studies & ethnicity, 3.62) and senior javelin thrower Leslie Erickson (public policy and development, 3.60). Both Clayton and Erickson were also on the second team in 2004 and honorable mention in 2003, Erickson was also honorable mention in 2002.
Sophomores Kate Hutchinson (discus), Lindsay Oman (hurdles) and Michelle Sanford (high jump/triple jump) received Pac-10 All-Academic honorable mention.
