Five Huskies Named to Academic All-Pac-10 First Team

June 10, 2005

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Five Washington track and field athletes have been named to the 2005 Pac-10 All-Academic first team, conference commissioner Tom Hansen announced Friday. An additional three Huskies earned second-team honors, while 12 more were recognized with an honorable mention.

To be eligible for selection to the academic team, a student-athlete must be a significant contributor with a minimum 3.0 grade-point average and at least one full academic year completed at the current institution.

Senior Angela Wishaar (Shoreline, Wash./Shorewood) was named to the All-Academic first team for the third-consecutive year, buoyed by a 3.85 grade-point average in Classics, and a 10th-place performance in the 10,000 meters at the Pac-10 Championships. Also honored with first-team acclaim for the third-straight year was senior Brandon Bailey (Lacey, Wash./North Thurston), a psychology major with a 3.75 GPA.

That pair was joined by three first-time recipients of the first-team honor, including seniors Martin Bingisser (Bellevue, Wash./Interlake), Kevin Peters (Longview, Wash./Mark Morris) and Camille Connelly (Marysville, Wash./Marysville-Pilchuk).

Just three years out of high school, Bingisser will graduate from UW on Saturday with a 3.86 GPA in philosophy, and has been accepted to UW's School of Law for fall quarter enrollment. The third-place Pac-10 finisher in the hammer, Bingisser has two years of collegiate eligibility remaining, which he plans to use while pursuing his J.D.

Peters, who boasts a 3.51 GPA in psychology, also has two years of eligibility remaining, during which he will try to move up from his current seventh-place spot in Washington's all-time rankings at 10,000 meters. Meanwhile, Connelly's 3.71 GPA in molecular cell development earned the senior her first first-team honor, after sweeping second-team all-conference honors in track and cross country each of the past two seasons.

An additional three Huskies were named to the All-Academic second team, including seniors Andy Fader (3.43, economics) and Kate Soma (3.50, marketing), and junior Sam Roberts (3.41, political science). All three have earned the honor at least once before, while Soma was named to the 2005 ESPN the Magazine District VIII All-Academic first team in May, and will be on the ballot for All-America honors later this month.

Rounding out the Huskies' academic honorees were a dozen honorable mention recipients, including seniors Will Conwell, Sidney Brown, Lindsey Egerdahl, Lara Nelson and Grace Vela, juniors Mark Mandi, Phil McCary, Mike Sayenko, Brynne Steward and Tiffany Zahn, sophomore Brianna McLeod and graduate student Laura Halverson.
