June 14, 2005
LOS ANGELES--USC track and field head coach Ron Allice and assistant coach Tina Fernandes were named 2005 West Region head coach and assistant coach of the year respectively, by the United States Track Coaches Association at a banquet held on June 7 at the Radisson Hotel in Sacramento.
The USTCA is a non-profit association made up of coaches from all levels of track and field and cross country, including NCAA, NAIA, community college, high school and club programs as well as retired coaches and officials.
Allice guided the USC men's track and field team to a sixth place finish and the women's team to a seventh place finish at the 2005 NCAA Track and Field Championships held in Sacramento, CA from June 8-11. USC was one of only two universities with both its men's and women's team finishing in the top seven.
In Allice's 11 seasons at the helm, the Trojan men's team has finished in the top 10 in the NCAA championships eight times and the women's team seven times. Allice has coached more than 250 All-Americans and 16 Olympians in his 36 years of collegiate coaching and his 2001 Women of Troy team brought home USC's first NCAA championship in women's track and field.
Fernandes, in her sixth season as a USC assistant coach, is in charge of women's sprints. Under her guidance, USC's sprint crew has been among the best in the nation over the past few seasons. This season was no different, as Alexis Weatherspoon finished third in the 100m and fourth in the 200m at the 2005 NCAA championships. The women's 4x100m relay team dominated the Pac-10 this season, winning its fifth sprint relay title in the last six years, and had one of the fastest qualifying times in the NCAAs. She has also coached a number of All-Americans at USC, including current sprinter and hurdler Virginia Powell, who runs on the 4x100m relay team and won the Pac-10 titles in the 100m and 100m hurdles and the NCAA 100m hurdles title.
