Cal's Michael Jensen Captures Santa Clara County Championship

June 15, 2005

SAN JOSE, CA - California freshman golfer Michael Jensen captured the 2005 Ernie Pieper Santa Clara County Championship, finishing with a three-round 205 (-5) at the San Jose County Club June 5. The tournament is named for famed amateur Ernie Pieper, who won the competition in seven different decades of his life from the teens to the 1970's.

The Co-MVP of the 2005 Cal Golf Team, Jensen entered the final 18 holes of the tournament tied with San Jose State senior Justin Madison, after Madison had shot a morning round of 65. But, the Golden Bear standout pulled away with a 68 on the last round to win the tournament.

Jensen faced pressure in the afternoon round from James Hay, who got within two strokes of the lead on the 8th hole. Jensen chipped in from behind the green on the 9th, where the back-to-front slope, coupled with the traditionally fast San Jose Country Club greens could have easily resulted in a bogey. From that point on, Jensen was never seriously challenged.

As a true freshman, Jensen was also named honorable mention All-Pac-10, tying for seventh at the 2005 Pac-10 Championships with a four-round 283 (-1).
