OSU Track & Cross Country Conclude Their First Year Back

Corvallis, Ore. - Oregon State women's track and cross country program returned to intercollegiate competition this year, for the first time since the 1987 to 1988 academic year. Under the leadership of OSU head Coach Kelly Sullivan, the Beavers performed strong during the cross country and track season breaking records and receiving Pacific-10 honors.
The cross country team finished their season 16th at the NCAA West Regional Cross Country Championships. Ashley Younce fnished three positions out of qualifying for the NCAA Championships in Cross Country. Younce also finished third out of 54 runners in the first meet of the season with a time of 18 minutes and 42 seconds.
The cross country team shined academically, with nine runner earning Pac-10 All-Academic honors. Jamie Fuller, Michelle Wilson, Ashley Younce, Erin Clark, Nicole Crawford, Stacey Fisher, Katie Magnuson, Allie Schroeder and Kelsea Schwing were the young ladies honored for their academic excellence. The team also stood out, being honored as having the fifth highest GPA in the nation.
The track team finished their season with new records and academic honors as well. Four ladies broke OSU All-Time Top 10 lists in the 1,500 meters, 5,000 meters, 10,000 meters, and 3,000 meter steeplechase. Jean-Marie Peterson and Lauren Denfeld broke the 1,500 list, with a seventh place and eight place ranking of 4:38.80 and 4:39.71 respectively. Ashley Younce placed sixth on the 5,000 meter list, with at time of 17:19.80. Younce also placed third on the 10,000 meter list while teammate Nicole Crawford placed sixth. Younce's time in the event was 37:37.21 while Crawford's time was 38:17.04. Lauren Denfeld also broke an OSU record, becoming the first individual to compete in the 3,000 meter steeplechase at OSU. Denfeld's time of 11:28.38 puts her as the first and only individual on the list for the event.
The track team also finished their season with Pac-10 Academic Honors. Jamie Fuller received First Team honors for Pac-10 Women's Track and Field All-Academic, and Ashley Younce received second team honors. Ashley Francis, Katie Magnuson, Courtney Schrage, and Lucy Twohy received Pac-10 Women's Track and Field Academic Honorable Mention.
The OSU women's track and cross country season finished strong their first season back, and is eager for more competition next year.
