UCLA golfers Kevin Chappell and Chris Heintz easily advanced to the match play round of the 94th California State Amateur Wednesday at Pebble Beach Golf Links. Daniel Im qualified for the U.S. Amateur Publinks Championship in Sacramento and incoming freshman Erik Flores was leading the Toyota Junior World Golf Cup in Japan.
Chappell posted a third round score of 70 (-2) at Pebble Beach and tied for fourth at 215 (-1), while Heintz tied for 11th place at 218 (+2) after posting an even par round of 72 on Wednesday.
Both players advanced to match play, which begins on Thursday at Pebble Beach.
In USAPL qualifying on June 19, Im, a sophomore, compiled a two-round total of 138 to earn a spot in the 84th annual event, which will be played Shaker Run Golf Club in Lebanon, OH.
In Japan, Flores posted rounds of 65-71--136 (-8) to build a three-stroke lead at the Chukyo Golf Club Ishino Course. His first round 65 (-7) was a course record. In team standings, the United States was second at 11-under par, trailing England by one stroke.
