Tara Kirk Wins 200 Breast At Santa Clara International Meet

Santa Clara, Calif. - Former Stanford swimmer Tara Kirk (2000-04) won the 200 breast on the second day of action Friday at the long-course meters 2005 Santa Clara International Meet. Kirk clocked in with a time of 2:30.04 to finish comfortably ahead of second-place Asami Kitagawa of Japan (2:31.28). Current Stanford swimmers Dana Kirk (100 fly, 3rd, 1:00.52) and Brooke Bishop (100 free, 7th, 57.42) also reached 'A' finals on Friday. Dana Kirk will be a senior at Stanford in 2005-06, while Bishop begins her sophomore campaign.
All three of Stanford's affiliates in Friday's finals were swimming for Palo Alto Stanford Aquatics.
Laura Davis (2005-06 senior) swam the anchor leg (1:00.27) as a member of a second-place 400 free relay squad (3:55.37) for the Terrapins Swim Team. She was also 11th in the 200 breast (2:38.53) and 17th in the 100 fly (1:04.05, 1:03.48 prelims).
Bishop added an 11th-place showing in the 100 fly in 1:02.44.
Elizabeth Durot (17th, 4:23.31) was a 'B' finalist in the 400 free, taking 17th overall with a time of 4:23.31 while participating for the Dynamo Swim Club. Desiree Stahley (2005-06 junior) ended up 20th with a time of 4:22.60 while racing in the 'C' finals. Stahley was also the second leg (1:00.07) on a fifth-place Palo Alto Stanford Aquatics 400 free relay 'A' squad (3:57.04).
Durot (51st, 1:00.34 prelims) and Stahley (52nd, 1:00.36 prelims) also swam in the 100 free.
Costella took 41st in the 400 free (4:30.06 prelims) for the Carson Tigersharks, while Rodriguez finished 70th in the 100 fly (1:07.14) while swimming for Palo Alto Stanford Aquatics.
Natalie Coughlin (100 free, 54.98) of California Aquatics, Kelsey Ditto of Longhorn Aquatics (400 free, 4:11.92) and Mary Descenza (100 fly, 1:00.17) of the Athens Bulldogs Swim Club joined Tara Kirk as individual winners on Friday. An Athens Bulldog Swim Club of Kara Lynn Joyce (57.80), Andrea Georoff (58.91), Tricia Harms (59.63) and Descenza (56.21) captured the 400 free relay.
Prelim and finals action in four individual events (400 individual medley, 100 breast, 200 free, 100 back), as well as finals only competition in the 800 free relay will take place on Saturday at the meet being held at the Santa Clara International Swim Center, which is one of four stops on the Grand Prix circuit leading up to the FINA World Championships from July 24-31 in Montreal.
