Cochran Falls into a Tie for 52nd at U.S. Women's Open
June 25, 2005
UCLA sophomore Amie Cochran was tied for 52nd place at the 70th U.S. Women's Open, hosted at the Cherry Hills Country Club in Cherry Hills Village, CO.
Cochran posted a third round score of 80 (+9) and fell to 225 (+12) for the tournament. She trails the leaders by 11 shots.
The day began well for Cochran. She birdied the first hole, but bogeyed the next four for an outward 39. She birdied the 11th, but carded four bogeys and a double bogey for an inward 41.
Not surprisingly, Cochran's statistics in the third round fell compared to her second round score of 69. Most notably, she carded nine bogeys and a double-bogey in Saturday's round, while she posted just two bogeys in the second round. After hitting 78% of her greens in regulation on Friday, she managed to hit just eight of 14 greens on Saturday.
Amateurs Morgan Pressel and Michelle Wie were tied with professional Karen Stupples for the third round lead at two-under par 214.
Top-ranked Annika Sorrentstam, trying to become the first female to win the Grand Slam, was five strokes off the lead at 219 (+3)
Cherry Hills CC was playing to a par of 71 over 6,749 yards. Sunday is the fourth and final round.
