WSU Well-Represented at Pacific Northwest Amateur Championships

PULLMAN, Wash. - A combined nine members of the Washington State University men's and women's golf teams are competing at the 2005 Pacific Northwest Golf Association Amateur Championships taking place this week.
Six Cougars - Chad Carlson, Kevin Chen, defending champion David Fern, Jordan Madison, Jordan Mason and Logan Toskey - are competing in the men's championship at Oakbrook Golf and Country Club in Lakewood, Wash., July 11-16.
Madison (Pasco, Wash.) opened the event with a 6-under 65 to tie for the lead after the first day of stroke play qualifying Monday (July 11). Madison's round included eagles on the first two holes, four birdies and just two bogies for nines of 32 and 33.
Action continues Tuesday with the second and final round of stroke play qualifying. After completion of play Tuesday, the field of 161 golfers will be cut to the low 64 scorers for match play. The 64 golfers will then play single-elimination, 18-hole matches Wednesday through Friday, with the championship final match set for 36-holes on Saturday.
Incoming senior Anastasia Kostina (Nakhabino, Russia) is tied for third at the conclusion of the first day of stroke play qualifying at the women's amateur championship at Twin Lakes Golf & Country Club in Federal Way, Wash., July 11-15.
Kostina opened with a 4-over 76 and was just four shots off the pace heading into Tuesday's second and final round of stroke play qualifying. Following Tuesday's play, single-elimination match play competition will take place Wednesday through Friday. Along with Kostina, WSU's Ami Larson and Tracy Broders are competing at the event.
