TAIPEI, Taiwan -- USC right-hander Ian Kennedy (Huntington Beach/La Quinta HS) tossed seven no-hit, scoreless innings as the USA Baseball National Team edged Chinese Taipei 1-0 Friday night in the first of five games in the 2005 USA vs. Chinese Taipei Friendship Series.
Kennedy (2-1) struck out nine and walked two; he also hit a batter and had two batters reach due to infield errors. Each of the first five outs Kennedy recorded was by virtue of a strikeout with only a two-out, first-inning walk by Luo Guo-Huei to disrupt the series of punch-outs.
Team USA scored the game's lone run in the top of the sixth. Matt Wieters (Georgia Tech, Fr., Goose Creek, S.C.) doubled to the gap in right-center with one out. J.P. Arencibia (Tennessee, Fr., Miami, Fla.) followed with a single through the left side to put runners at the corners. John Jay (Miami-FL, So., Miami, Fla.) then plated Wieters with a high chopping groundout to shortstop.
That was all the offense Kennedy and reliever Mark Melancon (Arizona, So., Golden, Colo.) needed. Chinese Taipei broke up Team USA's no-hitter bid with one out in the eighth as Chu Yuan-Chin lined a solid single up the middle. However, Melancon got out of the eighth with five consecutive outs for his first save of the summer. He finished with four strikeouts in 2.0 scoreless innings of work.
Arencibia was 3-for-4 at the plate; Shane Robinson (Florida State, So., Tampa, Fla.) turned in Team USA's only other multiple-hit game, going 2-for-5. Wes Hodges (Georgia Tech, So., Ooltewah, Tenn.) was 1-for-2 and walked twice.
In three starts for Team USA this summer, Kennedy is 2-1 with a 1.62 ERA after 16 2/3 innings of work. He has allowed just two hits for a miniscule .038 opponents' batting average to go with three runs, four walks and 20 strikeouts.
