Puhakka Places Ninth In 3-Meter At World Championships

TEMPE, Ariz. (www.TheSunDevils.com) -- Arizona State senior diver Joona Puhakka placed ninth in the 3-meter springboard event at the FINA World Diving Championships Tuesday afternoon in Montreal, Canada.

Qualifying 10th after the preliminary round, Puhakka missed his first dive according to ASU head diving coach Mark Bradshaw, bur recovered nicely to place in the top 10 in the world. Puhakka finished the six-dive final with a score of 658.83. Canadian Alexandre Despatie won the gold medal in the event.

'Joona started out a little slow which is uncharacteristic for him, but he recovered nicely,' added Bradshaw. 'He placed in the top 10 in the world and will go after a medal in the 1-meter event on Thursday.'

Puhakka, who won the one and three-meter NCAA Championships in the spring, will defend his bronze medal in the 3-meter event from the 2003 World Championships in Barcelona, Spain starting Thursday morning.
