Rankin Wins First Post-Collegiate Race in Sweden
July 19, 2005
Recent graduate Jon Rankin won his first post-collegiate race this past weekend in Karlstad, Sweden as he defeated the Swedish National Champion handily in the (A) 800m race.
Rankin, who finished sixth in the 1500m at the USATF Senior National Championships in June, won the 800m in Sweden (1:47.61), running just off his personal-best (1:47.11). Competing in his UCLA jersey in front of 8,000 people, Rankin stayed in the middle of the pack for the majority of the race, but with 190m left took the lead and never looked back.
After crossing the finish line, Rankin was asked to take a victory lap and was given a bouquet of roses and the Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2005 video game for his win.
'I could see the shadows of the other runners at 110m to go to my right, but those faded with every stride home,' said Rankin. 'I really finished strong without tying up.'
Rankin will continue to compete in Europe this summer with two more meets in Sweden and one meet in Norway.
