Puhakka Just Misses Bronze At World Championships
July 21, 2005
TEMPE, Ariz. (www.thesundevils.com) -- Arizona State University senior diver Joona Puhakka just missed out on the bronze medal in the 1-meter springboard competition Thursday afternoon in the FINA World Diving Championships in Montreal, Canada. Puhakka placed fourth with a final-round score of 441.78.
Puhakka was in third place after his last dive, but China's Feng Wang scored 9.0 and 9.5's on his final dive to narrowly edge Puhakka for the bronze medal. Puhakka won the bronze medal in the 2003 World Championships in Barcelona, Spain. Canada's Alexandre Despatie finished a sweep of both springboard events by winning the event with a score of 489.69.
'Joona had a good day diving, it just came down to some degree of difficulty and he just missed getting a medal,' said ASU head diving coach Mark Bradshaw. 'It was a very close contest and he did well enough to win a medal, it just didn't happen.'
The four-time NCAA Champion also placed ninth in the 3-meter event on Tuesday and returns to Tempe next month to begin training for his senior season.
