Bruin Divers Impressive at Senior Zone D Championships

This past weekend (July 22-24), the UCLA Diving Team competed at the Senior Zone D Championship Meet held at USC. The Bruins had a great showing, placing multiple divers in every event final, with three current and two future Bruins qualifying to the USA Diving Senior National Championships to be held in Huntersville, NC August 9-13, 2005.
On Friday in the Women's One Meter event, Bruin senior Amanda Blong qualified for her very first National Championship with a third place finish in the event. Amanda was third in the preliminary and was able to hold off some stiff competition in the final to advance to the meet.
Both Sara Clark (RS-Jr.) and Brittany Renfrow (So.) qualified for the final and finished 8th and 11th respectively. Future Bruin Marisa Samaniego also qualified for the final placing 10th. Future Bruin Brittany Hill competed, finishing 18th while Senior Paige Thompson finished 24th.
On Saturday in the Women's Three Meter event, the Bruins continued the command of their performances in the pool as Bruins took five of the top twelve spots in the final. Sophomore Brittany Renfrow won her first Zone Championship as a Bruin with a score of 427.65.
Senior Paige Thompson took fifth, and as a prequalified entrant, allowed the sixth spot to be additionally taken to the US National meet. That spot belonged to future Bruin Marisa Samaniego who qualified for her first ever Senior National Meet.
On Sunday in the Women's Platform event, Bruins Sara Clark and Janine Strack battled through a tough event just missing the qualifying marks. Sara finished 9th, just 11 points out of the qualifying, and Janine 11th, while another future Bruin, Tess Schofield made her mark finishing second and qualifying to the National Meet.
'The weekend was filled with success,' said Head Coach Tom Stebbins. 'I am so very pleased with how we competed over the weekend. I couldn't be happier with the direction our program is headed. I believe we certainly have the ability to make a mark out at the National Championship Meet next month.'
