Jesse Williams Qualifies For World Championships With School-Record Jump

July 26, 2005

USC's senior high jumper Jesse Williams had a jump of 7-6 ½ today (July 26) at the DN Galan Track and Field Championships in Stockholm, Sweden, to finish second in the event and qualify for the World Championships to be held Aug. 6-14 in Helsinki, Finland.

Williams, the 2005 Pac-10 Field Athlete of the Year, cleared the qualifying height on his second attempt in the final meet to earn a spot at the World Championships, and he did it during wet and rainy conditions. His jump of 7-6 ½ also betters his school record of 7-6, which he set on June 11 in winning the NCAA high jump championship.

Williams, who is the only Trojan to win both the NCAA indoor and outdoor high jump championships in the same season, will be competing on Aug. 12 and Aug. 13 at the World Championships.
