July 30, 2005

TEMPE, Ariz. (www.thesundevils.com) -- Former Arizona State All-American swimmer Nick Brunelli will contend for a medal today in the finals of the 50m freestyle event at the 2005 FINA World Aquatic Championships in Montreal, Canada

Brunelli, who was an All-American in each of his four years in Tempe (2001-04), swam a 22.19 in Friday's semifinal to qualify tied for fourth for Saturday's final. He will swim in the second lane in Saturday's final. The 23-year-old native of Mansfield, Mass., bettered his time of 22.64 that won the same event two weeks ago at the 2005 Janet Evans Invitational. Brunelli just missed a spot on the 2004 Olympic squad and earned a gold medal (400m free relay) and a bronze (50m free) at the 2004 Short Course World Championships in Indianapolis, Ind.
