Four Stanford Affiliates Reach Finals At 2005 Summer Senior Nationals

Irvine, Calif. - Four Stanford women's swimming affiliates reached the 'A' finals of their respective events on the second day of competition Thursday at the 2005 ConocoPhillips Summer Senior National Championships. The performances were highlighted by fourth-place showings from sisters Tara and Dana Kirk. Tara (2000-04) was fourth in the 200 breast in a time of 2:29.83, while Dana (2005-06 senior) took fourth in the 200 fly in 2:11.79. Andrea Axtell (2005-06 freshman) was sixth in the 200 back (2:14.77), while Caroline Bruce (2005-06 sophomore) placed seventh in the 200 breast (2:31.68, 2:31.15 prelims). All four swimmers had qualified higher in the prelims of their events.
Brooke Bishop (2005-06 sophomore) competed in a pair of events, taking 16th in the 100 free (57.56) and 20th in the 200 back (2:18.44, 2:17.63 prelims). Laura Davis (2005-06 senior) ended up 24th in the 200 fly (2:18.25) and 32nd in the 200 breast (2:36.00, 2:35.88), while Kristen Caverly was entered in both the 200 back and 200 fly but did not swim in either.
All Stanford affiliates were swimming for Palo Alto Stanford Aquatics other than Axtell (Longhorn Aquatics) and Davis (Terrapin Swim Team).
Individual event winners on Thursday were Amanda Weir of Swim Atlanta-GA (100 free, 54.47), Rebecca Soni of Scarlet Aquatic (200 breast, 2:26.27), Leah Retrum of the Donner Swim Club (200 back, 2:11.00) and Wildcats Aquatics' Elaine Breeden (200 fly, 2:09.85).
The five-day long-course meters meet that began Tuesday at the William J. Woollett Aquatic Center will continue with the third day of action Friday and run through this Sunday, August 7. Heats start each day at 9:00 am, PT, while the finals session is scheduled to begin at 6:30 pm, PT.
