Sun Devil Wrestling Nears Starting Date

Aug. 8, 2005

TEMPE, Ariz. - Nearly five months removed from capturing its 15th Pac-10 Conference Championship and the 17th conference team title in program history, the Arizona State University wrestling team is closing in on the start of another season.

Although the season does not officially begin until November, the Sun Devils will have plenty to do until then as they look to defend their conference crown. For starters, all returning student-athletes, incoming wrestlers and any university student wanting to walk-on to the squad are required to meet with the coaches and their support staff on August 23 (Tuesday) at 4 p.m. The meeting, which will take place in rooms 35/41 of Wells Fargo Arena, will serve as the starting point of the 2005-06 season.

From there, the training begins and leads up to the final weekend in October as the team co-hosts the annual Sunkist Kids/ASU International Open inside Wells Fargo Arena. Slated for Oct. 21 and 22, the Open is one of the selection tools Team USA utilizes to determine its winter traveling teams.

November 12 is the day all the Sun Devils have circled on their calenders as the season officially gets underway as ASU plays host to Pac-10 foe Portland State in a 7 p.m. dual inside WFA.
