Kim Jagd Completes Successful Summer with USA Volleyball HP National Team
Aug. 9, 2005
UCLA assistant women's volleyball coach Kim Jagd has completed another successful summer of work with USA Volleyball's High Performance (15 and under) national team. One of the three teams took a gold medal at USA Volleyball's Regional Championship in July, despite playing 'up' in the 17 and under age group. Jagd's work with the High Performance (HP) national team followed two appearances at USA Volleyball coaching clinics earlier in the year.
At the January coaching clinic, Jagd gave two presentations to a group of approximately 100 coaches ranging from age-group club coaches to NCAA Division I coaches. One presentation was on arm swing training, a second session involved on-court training session where coaches were able to try the skills being taught in all sessions.
In July, Jagd served as the head coach of the HP camp in Austin, Texas. The 27 players selected to the camp were divided into three teams of nine players. Each team went on to compete in the HP Regional Championship with Jagd's 'Red' team taking the championship, defeating the Lonestar team in the Youth Division championship match. USA Blue took fifth place while the White team took 11th in the 24-team field.
'This talented group of young athletes exhibited poise and maturity beyond their years,' said Jagd. 'Since this was a competition year for the HP age group, I wanted to focus on the athlete's ability to play the `out-of-system' game. We focused on defense and non-setter setting, as well as front- and back-row `out-of-system' attacking. This work paid off enormously for these young athletes.
'My staff was remarkable with the athletes, encouraging, teaching and training them at an elite level,' she added. 'For most of these athletes this is their first experience training intensely for six straight days followed by a four-day, international-style tournament. It was a great learning experience for all.'
This was Jagd's third year as a Head Coach with USA Volleyball, her second as the head coach of the HP National Team. It was her fifth year working with the High Performance program.
UCLA's women's volleyball team will report for pre-season training on Wednesday, August 10. The Bruins, ranked 13th in the pre-season CSTV/AVCA Coaches Poll, open their 2005 season over Labor Day weekend in Reno, Nevada.
