Swimmers Have Solid Showing at USA Nationals
Aug. 9, 2005
Swimming in front of thousands of fans at the 2005 ConocoPhillips National Championships August 3-7 in Irvine, CA, several UCLA Bruins fared well, highlighted by Katie Arnold's successful weekend.
Arnold, a junior this Fall, finished 10th in the 100m Back (1:04.00), just missing a spot in the final by 0.8 seconds. In the 200m Back, Arnold placed 21st (2:18.48) and won her heat in the preliminary round of the 100m Fly (1:01.52).
Senior Eileen Seissen also had a succesful weekend, swimming two lifetime-bests in the 100m and 200m Breaststroke.
Sophomore Chiemi Yamamoto advanced to the console final in the 400 IM with a time of 4:54.59.
Senior Kim Vandenberg, almost always is a top finisher at meets, but has been training hard for the upcoming World University Games and did not advance to a final in any event at the meet. Although this meet wasn't her best, Vandenberg will be rested and ready to vie for a title in the 200 Fly in Turkey.
Head Coach Cyndi Gallagher and Vandenberg will both head to Turkey where Vandenberg will compete in the 200 Fly and Gallagher will serve as an assistant coach for the U.S. Swim competition begins August 12 and Vandenberg is slated to compete on the last day of competition, August 17. Vandenberg could also be named to one of the relay teams.
'There are over 700 swimmers entered, the largest in the history of the competition and includes many full World Championships teams coming from the competition in Montreal,' said Gallagher.
'This is a wonderful opportunity for Kim to represent the USA, as well as UCLA at an international competition. She has trained hard so she will be at her best and although there will be a lot of challenges along the way (hour bus ride to the pool, crowded warm-up pool, lack of air conditioning and different food), it will be a good lesson in learning to be flexible. Everyone will be facing the same conditions and Kim can swim fast anywhere. It is also a great life experience to visit another country and see the beauty, meet the people and find out about the culture of that country. We are both excited for the adventure.'
